We had a great fishing outing with 6 wrestlers & 4 coaches on Tuesday, June 21st out of Manitowoc Marina. Once again Mother Nature cried a lot.
The winning boat was the Mistress co-captained by Jeff Kluever and Jeremy Van Schyndel along with wrestlers Scott Vandeloo & Vince Zornow which had 9 fish. The other boat, 2 The Jobsite, had 6 fish, including the largest, a 16 # King Salmon caught by Tres Leon. This boat was co-captained by Bob Koehler & Steve Mc Daniel and had Ryley Reffke, Evan Hietpas, & Baily Van Handel on it as well as Tres. "Rainbow" Riley Reffke lived up to his nickname & landed a nice rainbow trout.
Fifteen fish were caught in total including rainbow trout, lake trout, coho salmon, & king salmon. The two teams wrestled fish for about 3 hours & were chased off by a storm. At that point 2 The Jobsite was leading with 6 fish to 4 for the Mistress crew.
The weather cleared & the boats went back out. In the " overtime " session the Mistress crew boated 5 more fish & came away with the win by totaling 9 fish.
Another awesome day on the Great Lakes and everyone had a lot of fish to take home for supper.
Thanks to everyone for the use of boats including the 3 "on call" boats of Kirk & Lisa Cichy, as well as Jim Huss, & Ric Mathyss.

On August 24-25 around 30 volunteers from the Kaukauna Wrestling Nation installed a spring loaded subfloor in the KHS wrestling room. All coaches representing the Kaspers, Phantoms, Eagles and Ghosts lead the effort. The workforce also included high school wrestlers, alumni, school adminstrators, and parents.
The floor's concept was derived from the Denver Judo (Dojo) floor, which have become popular throughout the country in judo clubs and other martial arts gyms. The same floor was also installed earlier this summer in the high school wrestling room in Apple Valley, MN. The AV project manager, Don Watts, was used as a consultant for the Kaukauna project.
The concept of the floor is very simple. Instead of using spring coils or wooden studs to support the floor and provide "give", as commonly done in gymnastic and basketball floors, this floor used nearly 5,000 three-inch foam cubes to buoy two layers of one-half inch strand board. The foam cubes were fastened to sheets of strand board with contact cement and installed with the foam facing down throughout the room. The second layer of strand board was screwed over all the joints of the bottom layer to hold the floor together. After primer and two coats of paint, the mats are ready to unroll over the top.
The hollowness of the floor along with the slow rebound quality of the closed cell polyethelene foam will help to dissapate energy upon impact and relieve the stress to joints such as ankles, knees, and shoulders. The mats were previously on concrete and a hard compact rubber fitness floor that had no movement beneath the mat to absorb the energy that passed through.
In early August, a four-foot high block wall was erected to help contain the floor and to separate the activity area of the room from the corridor/observation area. Wrestling alumni Dave Schoen, Troy VanderLoop, and Gary VanderLoop volunteered their mason skills to the wall project.
These projects would not have happended without the support and help of the KASD Custodial and Maintenance Department, Tim Lang of Wisconsin Foam Packaging, County Materials, Wrightstown Lumber, Rick Matice, and Hallman and Lindsey Paints
The materials for the floor and wall were funded by a donation from the Kaukauna Wrestling Club and the workforce was voluntary. Other than an occasional coat of paint, this floor will provide a forgiving surface for not only wrestling, but also students in physical education classes and other activities for many years to come.
Check out the photos in the Summer 2010 photo album in the right sidebar. More photos to come soon.
The Kaukauna High Wrestling Room has seen some renovations this summer and the biggest change occured this week as a 60 foot long 52 inch high concrete block wall was erected on the open side of the wrestling area. Two 10 foot opening were left on each end to pass through as well as a four foot opening in the center where a padded door will be installed at the same height as the wall. The purpose of the wall is to separate the wrestling/activity area of the room from the corridor/storage area of the room. The next phase of renovation is to create a more forgiving subfloor beneath the mats. Plans for this project are in the works and hopefully will be complete real soon. When complete, the floor beneath the mats will have a hollow, almost bouncy feel to it. The forgiveness of this new surface will be much easier on the body for all activities, especially wrestling. The wall will also provide a containing edge to the subfloor within the room. After the floor is installed and mats back in place, the wall will be padded on the wrestling side for safety giving the room 4750 square feet of soft, flexible space contained by wall padding.
All materials for these projects were aquired through a combination of donations and the Kaukauna Wrestling Club. Former KHS standout wrestler Dave Schoen lead the wall building efforts along with help from Gary and Troy Vanderloop. Dave started on Friday morning and was done before noon on Saturday. Materials were provided by County Materials in Appleton and much of it donated. A big thanks to Dave, Gary, and Troy for donating their time, effort, and expertise to make this happen.
Check out the pictures in the summer 2010 photo album.
Thirty-two talented Kaukauna Area youth wrestlers recently completed the five week Ghost Trained summer wrestling academy taught by Coach Matczak. Students entering grades 4-9 were eligible to participate. All students demonstrated improvement of the skills and techniques practiced throughout the course. This group has the potential to accomplish great things on the mat if they continue to love learning how to wrestle from key positions we have identified and then by seeking out appropriate level competitions to test development. Remember that winning and losing does not translate to success and failure, especially at this age. Development of skills and mental readiness and the emergence of these two factors in live competition means true success. Victory will come in due time.
A group of 27 wrestlers and coaches returned Saturday from the Jeff Jordan State Champ Camp in St. Paris, Ohio. It was a great week of training sandwiched in between a couple of competitve opportunities. By weeks end the kids had maxed out and were ready to come home. The participants got hands on teaching from Coach Jordan and his staff twice a day, and each night ended with a grinding 90 minute live wrestling session, where kids got to compete against those from other parts of the country, such as Ohio, Michigan, South Carolina, and Kentucky.
The kids also spent a night and morning in the Izzy Style Wrestling facility in Benesville, IL and the Montini Catholic wrestling room. The club is owned by newly-appointed Montini head coach Israel Martinez.
Of course the week got off to a great start by swinging over to Madison to support the Lady Ghosts softball team enroute to their dominating state championship performance.

Even Mother Nature couldn't stop the Kaukauna Wrestling Team.
We had a very successful day on the Lake, even though it rained so hard we felt like we were in the lake! The trip was shortened to a few hours because of the heavy rains, over 2 inches fell while we were fishing.
Five boats managed to wrestle in 25 fish. The winning boat was II The Job Site captained by Steve McDaniel and his crew of Kyle Rose, MosHawQuit Bartz, and Jonah Gibbin. They caught the most fish, seven, and the largest, a 15 lb. 4 oz. King Salmon pulled in by Jonah Gibbin. (shown above)
One Lake Trout was caught along with a few Rainbow Trout (Steelhead) and many King (Chinook) Salmon.
Boats were from Kirk & Lisa Cichy, Rick Mathys, Jeremy Van Schyndel, Jeff Kluever, and Bob Koehler/ Steve Mc Daniel.
Fifteen wrestlers participated: Alex DeGroot, Trevor Koehler, Scott VanDeLoo, Travis VandenHeuvel, MosHawQuit Bartz, Vince Zornow, Evan Hietpas, Josh Barbara, Ethan Pelky, Riley Reffke, Kyle Rose, Jonah Gibbin, Nick Dercks, Tyler Nelson, and Dan Novak.
It was a great experience for the team and there are a lot of fish stories to be told. I am sure they are all true.
Congrats are in order for Noah Budi, Scott VanDeLoo, and Austin Hietpas.
Noah finished in a tie for sixth overall amongst all junior and senior wrestlers in Wisconsin for the Crossface Newspaper Academic All state team. The top 15 make first team, 16-30 second team, and then honorable mention. This honor is calculated by a formula combing GPA, State Place, and number of wins.
Scott was the #1 freshman and sophomore in the state of Wisconsin! He is the first Kaukauna wrestler to achieve the honor of #1 overall.
Austin was #35 overall for juniors and seniors earning him honorable mention recognition.
Great job by these three well rounded young men.

On Saturday, April 24, eighteen Kaukauna wrestlers competed in the State Freestyle Tournament at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School. Following Wisconsin Rapids, Kaukauna had the second most participants from a single school district at the tournament.
Freestyle is the international style of wrestling used at the World Championships and Olympics. Rules differ slightly from folkstyle (also known as collegiate or scholastic) wrestling we commonly see only in America. Freestyle awards greater points for back exposure and there is less emphasis on the control aspect compared to folkstyle.
The State Freestyle Tournament is organized by the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation (WWF), which is the state level organization under USA Wrestling. There are five age divisions; intermediate (youngest), novice, schoolboy, cadet, and junior (oldest), and weight classes within each division. Place winner awards went to the top six at each weight and opportunities to represent team Wisconsin on the national dual teams were appointed for the champions at the schoolboy, cadet, and junior levels.
After the dust settled Kaukauna had 15 of its 18 place in the top six, lead by intermediate champions John Deiner and Zach Lee at 65 and 75 pounds respectively. Deiner was also a WWF Folkstyle champion last month.
Other participants and noted place winners from Kaukauna were: Ty Lee 2nd, novice 70; Trent Leon 3rd, novice 75; Drew Krepline 4th, novice 80; Keaton Kluever 4th, novice 112; Dominick Anderson, schoolboy 70; Chance Eiting 5th, schoolboy 84; Tres Leon 4th, schoolboy 91; Bailey VanHandel 5th, schoolboy 98; Robert Lee 4th, schoolboy 98; Kolten Jansen, schoolboy 105; Justin Kloehn 6th, schoolboy 112; Scott VanDeLoo 2nd, cadet 160; Ethan Pelkey 5th, cadet 285; Austin Hietpas 2nd, junior 125; Trevor Koehler 6th, junior 130; and Alex DeGroot, junior 160.
The following day, eleven of these athletes stayed to compete in the WWF State Greco Tournament. Also known as Greco Roman, this style is similar to freestyle in awarding easy exposure points, but does not allow wresters to attack their opponent’s legs at any time. The same divisions and weight classes were used as freestyle. Kaukauna was lead by champions Zach and Ty Lee. Zach Lee added the two championships from this weekend to go along with his third place finish at the state folkstyle tournament last month.
Others to compete and place in Greco were: Chance Eiting 3rd, Robert Lee 3rd, Scott VanDeLoo 3rd, Tres Leon 4th, John Diener 5th, Trent Leon 5th, Dominick Anderson 6th, Bailey VanHandel, and Justin Kloehn.
